Local farmer Shu Mansheng starts the engines of his self-designed and homemade flying device before a test flight in front of his house in Dashu village on the outskirts of Wuhan, Hubei province

    Hand-propping one engine is bad enough, but eight? And once they’re all running, what’s your escape route from that center “cockpit” if something goes wrong? I admire his enthusiasm, but this looks like nothing if not a huge meat grinder…
