P51 engine failure and off field landing with analysis

Just realized I never saw this posted here or mentioned in the podcast (unless I missed it!) British airways pilot Mark Levy was flying formation in an airshow at Duxford England when the Mustang he was flying suffered an intermittent power loss. He was low, kinda slow, leaving him not a lot of time...

Golden age of accessible aviation content?

I think aviation 'media' has gone through some ups and downs over the years. I'll put down some stuff, sorta chronologically how I see it, and would love to get corrected if I'm off base. 1) Myths and legends. Icarus and such. Strictly realm of imagination. 2) Newspaper reporting of pioneers. Mongol...

List of 'must see' aviation destinations

I'd like to crowd source a bucket list of aviation destinations. I first thought it would be a list of museums, but maybe making it a little broader would be more fun? I'll kick things off with a short top 5 list. Feel free to insert, reposition, or even remove entries if you have something to simil...

FliteTest

Have you guys been following the stuff that the guys over at FliteTest have been doing? They started out doing Youtube reviews of RC airplanes and quads, then branched into selling some of their own designs. Beyond that, though, they've created some STEM curriculum stuff which they're trying to get ...

Cathartic 'goddamnit'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V2n0e5g42I The moment the pilot lets go and cusses after landing... You know, it's a bad day, but it could have been oh so much worse. The passenger should have shut up on approach. I would have told him to zip it while I concentrated. The look the pilot shot him aft...

San Jose International got a little cleaner today

We've all seen hangars full of fire retardant foam. Apparently a snafu with a fire retardant system led to an uncontained foam release *outside* a hangar, covering at least one access road a few feet deep in foam. Haven't seen an aerial of the 'disaster' but there must be a pic somewhere. http://www...

Re: Uncontained compressor failure?

Actually, on further investigation, it looks like the compressor blades are all still there?? The front cowl around the intake is gone, but the compressor blades look reasonably intact, which is, frankly, remarkable.

Uncontained compressor failure?

http://www.wsj.com/articles/southwest-a ... 1472320957

Summary: Southwest 737 climbing through FL300 makes a really big bang noise. Much of the front of the Number 1 engine is... well... gone.

Not often that I've heard of that happening.

If you're going to fly into rising terrain...

...you may as well land. http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/british-columbia/plane-emergency-landing-pemberton-glacier-1.3611197 Pilot was flying to Whistler and turned down the wrong valley. The beach craft musketeer they were in didn't have the climb performance to make it out, and there wasn't ro...

A 'low pass'? I dunno if it qualifies

At St. Barts there's an approach where pilots have to bring it in steep over a hillside on final approach. There's a road along the ridgeline, and spectators sometimes position themselves there to get shots of aircraft going close overhead. In this case, a pilot got a *little* bit low: https://www.y...
