A legend among many

A recent guest column in the local paper http://www.startribune.com/local/south/167545055.html talked about what I suspect is one of many unsung champions that made, and continue to make, aviation something we all want to be involved with (finally something positive in the mainstream press). Who do ...

Papa Paul's 90th

Paul_P_90th_20110911-141322_DSC_6650_07896b.jpg Beautiful weather for September in this neck of the woods so we just had to take advantage of it. My spouse and I made the circle tour of Wisconsin, stopping first to see the eldest child at MSN. Then it was on to OSH for the celebration of Paul Pober...

ADSB in the Wild

On a recent trip to KPQN http://www.airnav.com/airport/KPQN I noticed some new hardware on the airport grounds. PQN is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, but is about 50 nmi from Sioux Falls, SD (KFSD). Anyway, ADSB is out there and assuming we can find reasonably priced airborne gear, available ...

Scheduled GPS jamming?

A few eps back a scheduled GPS outage was discussed. The UK Royal Academy of Engineering thinks it might be a good idea to do that more often just so everyone can understand the weakness of the system and ensure that backup systems are in place and working. From the IEEE blog "Risk Factor"...

Part 103 FWI?

My wife brought up an interesting question after seeing this: http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=852106 She assumed it was an ultralight and was wondering what the drinking and flying rules would be. Ultimately the rules in for the pilot in the story are clear since the airplane ha...

Re: The old Russian birds seem to be alive and well

I did get a chance to snap a couple of photos as I was leaving Poland. Some gunships on the ramp at Krakow. EuroLot doesn't seem to clean the windows on their ERJ 170s very often. http://images1f.snapfish.com/232323232%7Ffp8%3C2%3Enu%3D3243%3E%3B63%3E7%3A8%3EWSNRCG%3D3265894%3B55339nu0mrj AN24s in K...

New way to spray crops

Anyone seen this thing yet? http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/the-dewline/2009/06/photos-new-gunship-flies-to-pa.html Kinda brings a whole new perspective to fighting the critters that can disturb your crop.

The old Russian birds seem to be alive and well

I just landed in Krakow, Poland. There seems to be a Polish AF transport unit on the field (gotta like the checkerboard insignia) and they have a whole bunch of apparently still operational examples, of Russian designs. Saw a whole bunch of AN-24s, three AN-2s, a collection of different helicopter t...
