Re: I've got a runway in my front yard!

Not quite one way, but I'd rather take a few knots downwind, which I did in this case, then to take off in the other direction for the simple reason that beyond the trees, it is littered with power lines, buildings, fences, etc. If the noise stops I would have very little options! :)

I've got a runway in my front yard!

After first flying here just before Christmas, I finally stuck a camera in the plane to show what landing here is like! This my 52 acre property 2nm south-east of the town of Freeling, South Australia. The departure airport was Gawler. Plenty of space for my SportStar and I reckon Jeb could land the...

Re: ADS-B: Security Through Obscurity

Jeb would apply for a digital certificate (like a web site's SSL certificate) from the FAA/ICAO, load it into his ADS-B box and sign all messages with it. The message itself does not need to be encrypted for it to be verified by its encrypted signature. Does ADS-B actually support this? No, that's ...

ADS-B: Security Through Obscurity

I am not impressed with the FAA (or any other national civil aviation authority) not addressing ADS-B concerns. At best, they are trying to practice "security through obscurity" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_through_obscurity But this shit be real, as they say. It will be dead easy...

AF447: Controls are a Red Herring

IMHO, the Airbus control system is nothing but a red herring when trying to understand loss of control due to failed pitot/static systems. These accidents happen from time to time and happen just as often with traditional controls. Jeb hit the nail on the head with wondering if the aircraft should h...

Re: Alan Smithee" UCAP #288

Don't forget you also can't hand prop a Rotax 912. The combination of having the reduction drive and the electronic ignition just makes it impossible. You can't even air start the things. If they stop in flight, the prop stops and you can't get it to turn. OK, maybe approaching Vne in a dive? Better...

Re: Wing Flapping

The guy has come clean on Dutch TV. A "social" experiment by this film maker.

Can't believe the amount of people that fell for it...

Re: Wing Flapping

Dutch, actually.

The first thing I look for to determine hoax status is lighting and shadows.

With the sun being so low, I would expect the shadow to disappear quite quickly.

Just not from one frame to the next as his feet leave the ground.

I am calling it a hoax for that reason.

Re: Best player for Podcasts? Old Ipod caught fire...

If you get an iPod Touch, you can run Apps like http://www.shiftyjelly.com/ios/pocketcasts - just download over wifi and never a need to plug it into a computer to update podcasts. Get latest ones wherever you find Wifi.
