Re: Learning at a Class C airport? and other questions.

OK, but does the 101 transition get you to OAK, or just allow you to transit the Bravo area north/south? Hwy 101 ends up to the west of SFO, which is the wrong side vs where you want to be to get to OAK, I would think. You can train where you want to; even if you do need to enter the class B to safe...

Re: Who's going to Sun-n-Fun 2010? Anyone flying there?

(I'll probably create a new thread for the "mount for fordan" discussion once I have a chance to organize my thoughts.) So President Obama is holding a Space Summit in Florida on April 15, right in the middle of Sun 'n Fun. While I'm happy he's talking about Space, and I'm happy the Presid...

Re: Learning at a Class C airport? and other questions.

I just took a look at the airspace around OAK & SFO on skyvector. That is significantly more challenging airspace than around your typical class C. Didn't dig deeply into it, but it looks like the safest way into OAK from east would involve a class B transit, something student pilots are...

Re: Learning at a Class C airport? and other questions.

A few responses in no real order. :) My training flights when I did my private pilot tended to be scheduled for 2 hours, which generally worked out to be 1.3-ish hours on the Hobbs, and maybe .3 of instruction pre and post. Often I didn't get charged at all by the CFI because pre-flight interaction ...

And here's a similar CNN story with a video that includes the audio: http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/03/03/air.traffic.child/?hpt=T2 It's nice that the media are also taking the "why is this a big deal" approach as well. I mean, there might be some distraction concern with your son at your ...

Re: Who's going to Sun-n-Fun 2010? Anyone flying there?

I have a hotel room reserved for Thu night-Sun for Sun 'n Fun, but I haven't booked the airline yet. The airfare is much higher than I'd expect at the moment, at least on my preferred (read, they often give me free upgrades and don't charge me for luggage) airline. Haven't managed the "buy a pl...

Re: Entering an Unfamiliar Traffic Pattern

Personally, I'd fly further south than PilotBill's diagram indicates in order to enter on a true 45 (not sure if that's what he meant by not as steep). I've had a pilot fly almost exactly what PilotBill drew while I was in the pattern, and it scared the heck out of me to suddenly (I didn't see him u...

Wouldn't being self-loading cargo be better than driving cross-country, especially in a car with no cruise control, per your tweets?

Re: Good IFR online course? or DVD's I suppose

I used King Schools (pre-online) for my private and picked up the Sporty's DVDs for my Instrument rating, which I haven't really started yet. When I did my private, the King's pre-online approach annoyed me a bit, since it locked me to my computer, didn't work well under VMware emulation on my Mac, ...
