Flying to Maine

Flying the family up for a week in Bar Harbor next week in our Grumman Tiger. Listening to other pilots, I've been told to avoid using Bar Harbors airport (KBHB) due to the chance of fog rolling in and not leaving for days. A number of folks I know have used Augusta (KAUG) frequently, but, giving th...

Re: Episode #193 "Finicky in the 10's"

On the topic of ELT's - let me start by saying that I agree that 406MHz ELTs are superior to the 121.5 units. But, as always, the cost of the unit is far from the total you'll pay to have a unit installed. My understanding is that the new ELTs require a switch that is easily accessible from the cock...

Re: Question about Oshkosh/AirVenture

OK - quite a few questions here - but I'll give a few of my own opinions. IFR into OSH - read the notam. There is a reservation system that looks like quite a hastle. I've heard from other pilots who have had good experiences with it. But, again, this is MY OPINION, the fun of arriving at Oshkosh be...

Red Bull OFLotW

I'm usually the last to know about this kind of event.

Technically this is more of an off field touch-and-go:

I suspect the pilot had to do a quick weight and balance calculation after the event, because if I were in his seat, I'd have dropped a load.

Re: Episode #186

Overall, good points, Greg. And I suspect your expertise trumps my opinion. But, in reply: Welll, maybe, but I think he was a bit taken aback that they actually declared an emergency in that situation. I think he was doing the best he could, given the situation and the information he had. The contro...

Re: Episode #186

The events at JFK could and should have been handled better by both parties. The pilot, was informed that the crosswinds exceeded his company's minimums. He knew that the only reason they weren't landing on 31R was because the parallel runway was being resurfaced. Diverting to another airport is a b...

The wait is almost over

For the last several years, I've been flying my dad's '79 Tiger - pretty much flying for the price of avgas. This winter, as it came clear that he needed to either overhaul the engine or sell the airplane, we worked out an agreement and I bought a half-share of the airplane. Within weeks of the new ...

Re: How does one convince their wife it will be ok...

I think that this is, indeed, a common issue. I tend to favor the all-out honest approach. To tell your spouse that flying is perfectly safe may make us feel better, but most reasonable persons know that there is an inherent risk to what we do. To dismiss this notion may do nothing but make your spo...

Re: AME Question

This one's a little over my head, and I'm sure there are more senior pilots out there with better answers. But AOPA's web page has a forum (forums.aopa.org) for "medical matters." What's great about that particular forum is that a few AME's tend to lurk and will often chime in with answers...
