I've run into a few instances of shutdown of my gen 4 iPad during long flights.
Last weekent I tried a product called icePad. It is a case with some sort of phase change material that is in the back. At room temperature it looks like white crystal, but as time went on in the flight, it started to liquify. No shutdown during a 3+ hour XC or the return flight.
Kind of a goofy looking case, but if it continues to prevent the shutdown due to overheating, I can live with the look.

I've had mine shut down a few times, too. I find that if I just point the orange juice can vent on the C-182 down to my lap that I don't seem to get that problem.

If you have the equipment, you begin to rely on it.
If you rely on it, it is only time before you are in situations where you need it.
None of us are immune from this.

Re: Overheating iPad
Im still running a gen 1 iPad
After it overheated the first time, I pretty much decided to stay with paper charts.
Then again, I mostly just do local vfr flying so I don't feel compelled to have all the latest tech gizmos in the airplane.
Luddite curmudgeonism at its very best.
