Ever heard of a "Heat Burst?"

Postby Sven » Wed Jun 12, 2013 2:05 am

This is an interesting phenomenon I must have missed during the weather section in flight school. I've never heard of this and I can imagine it would be quite confusing to a pilot flying into one of these.

Sorry to tug on an old thread....

But this is a real thing! I've experienced one in Oklahoma in June 1998. A thunderstorm collapsed just to the northeast of Tinker AFB, and the resulting "dry burst" spread-out once it hit the ground, raising winds about 25 knots and temps must have shot-up at least 10-15 degrees F.

One of the more interesting weather phenomena I've experienced in my Air Force Weather career!

I was checking out the forum page to see if there was any life and I saw a post on something called a "heat burst." Having no idea what that was I clicked on the link and found out it was me that started the discussion. Good lord.

Yeah, it's been awhile. But please do check here from time to time. We're trying to revive it.
