Some great advice for an AirVenture newbie such as myself, thanks chaps!

Any advice on getting from Appleton Airport to Oshkosh?? Arriving at about 9am on the Monday and brain will be mush from travel, but am adament that I can "press on" and do day one before collapsing!! I know there's a Walmart next to the Appleton Airport where I intend to grab some supplies (light foldaway chair for example!) but is it worth a taxi ride or is there public transport that will get me to the grounds???

One to add: If you're gonna be there on Thursday plan on attending our annual tie-down party, from 6pm - 8pm. More details as we get closer.

I plan to attend this year. It will be my first one, and I intend to fly in and camp. Sun N Fun was a blast. I had the pleasure of meeting (and chatting) with Dave. Look forward to meeting and imbibing with the whole gang.

Think travel, pay, food, and lodging for 87 highly trained professionals for one to two weeks. Not saying EAA should have to pay it, just that on the surface it doesn't seem like an outrageous calculation.

All the folks were already trained and on the payroll. Yes some travel and expenses and overtime maybe, but still seems pretty steep.
On the other hand, it won't do any good to make FAA folks at Oshkosh miserable by complaining to them. They are stuck in a broken system and must be miserable already but still doing a great job.
Congress created this mess and only they can fix it. Just enough members are so out to lunch that they need failure to justify their reelection bids, sick as that sounds. "Blame them and reelect me."
We are the electors and it is up to us to weed out the ideological dead meat.

Let's use some round numbers for the 3 items you mentioned for a 10 day event -

airfare - $1,000
hotel - $1,500 ($150/day)
food - $500 ($50 / day)

I've not been to AirVenture, but I have to believe $3000 a person is well within reason. That is $261,000 total.

The EAA is taking a beating on this in other forums.

In my back-of-the-napkin estimate, I was actually cheaper with the lodging and food, but included an amount for cost of labor. The quoted article said the fees were for "air traffic control services", not just travel expenses.

Anyway, it's just an intellectual exercise. EAA is getting screwed no matter how you figure it!
