A show worth checking out: Ice Pilots NWT

Postby gmarshall » Tue Dec 01, 2009 4:29 am

Put out by Canada's History Channel, this is a 'reality TV' show about Buffalo Airways. They operate DC3s, DC4s, C46 Commandos and a Lockheed Electra in Canada's far north, supplying towns with no road access throughout most of the year.

I don't know if it's just because I'm a pilot and a plane nut, but I found it quite entertaining.

Yeah - I checked that out. What an awesome show. The first episode was a few weeks back. Weird thing - the first episode in the Sat Guide said it was episode #3. Perhaps there were some unaired shows or someting?

I fly up in Canada, and it can get down right cold some days doing the walk around - but my God - I'm sure it's nothing like what they have to contend with.

Ya me too. I wanted to see that.
Someone has got the fix in to get paid before it can be shown here. We have too much of that sort of thing getting through our Congress.

Ice Pilots NWT

This Canadian television series definitely merits mention on the UCAP podcast.

A few weeks ago Jeb and Dave were ranting about why GA is unappreciated by the media and the politicians in America. This show is dramatic evidence of the vital role that small airplanes and small airports play in making life sustainable in some of the most difficult terrain in North America. Having this show, or others like it, on the airwaves would got a long way to improving Americans' understanding of general aviation.

If the Discovery Channel and History Channel people are listening to their audience, they will get in touch with the Ice Pilots NWT producers quickly and get this show on the air down here in the lower 48! We UCAP listeners should help encourage them.

Has anyone found a way to watch this in the States? We can't talk about it until we know a little bit more about it. (Or can at least pretend to know something about it.)

They've got a spectacular web site - lots of eye candy (of the vintage airliner type).

God, the production quality is so high you'd think it was all done in the States.

We Canadians have been pretty proud of our aviation - Wings over Canada is another perfect example of GA in the media.

Here's another bush pilot show

http://watch.discoverychannel.ca/out-in-the-cold/season-1/out-in-the-cold-ice-pilot/#clip33055

An episode from "Out in the Cold" where the Host and German/Canadian pilot make a supply run to checkpoint Scraggy Creek on the Yukon Quest Dogsled Race.

Production quality that is Canadian (that is "the highest", but then Canadians don't ever want to brag) ;)

Beginning to feel "out in the cold" here where we are reaching the end of a three day cold snap, can't watch these videos, and the washing machine in the garage is still frozen up solid.
