My last cross-country as private pilot

Postby sballmer » Sat Jan 16, 2010 2:35 pm

I am about to board an airliner back to Japan.
But even though there is not much left to enjoy in being mailed
across the Pacific, I have a subtle smile on my face.

Why? Well, for one I got my commercial pilot's license on Jan. 14.
That admittedly feels almost as good as when I got my co-pilot license.
(Read: my wife's private pilot's license.)

But more importantly I want to talk about that flight last weekend.
As it happened my father, a licensed pilot in Switzerland, was in
town and had a weekend to spare. Since I wanted to get some more time
in type before my commercial check ride anyway, we decided to point the
nose eastward. After an overnight stay in Vegas we got up early and headed
out over the Grand Canyon. It was the perfect day: cold and few high cirri
to keep the thermals down and the air smooth, but otherwise unlimited
visibility. On the way back west my Dad told me "You know, I didn't think
I'll ever get to do this." Flying the Canyon is simply something special,
even if you are already a rated pilot overseas.

It's magic moments like this make GA all worthwhile. And I want to thank
the whole UCAP crew for helping to keep that magic alive.

Stefan

That is some seriously empty country. Great pics. What we get to do is amazing and should be taken one day at a time, because each day, and flight is special. Thanks for sharing.
Come up to the Great North West next time, it is pretty cool up here also.
Remember, not all who wander, are lost.

I love the Great North West. For one you have some of the green stuff up there. What do you call it? Was it "trees"?

Kidding aside, I have some great memories of a flight to Joseph State (4S3). Made me understand why more than a century ago the Great Chief Joseph defended his home country to the end.
