Air France 447 Debris Found Underwater

Postby Sven » Sun Apr 03, 2011 7:26 pm

Hopefully this find will lead to others and the eventual discovery of the black box so the families involved can get some answers to what happened to their loved ones.

Have to learn what section of the plane they found and whether they can get the recorders.

Depths in that area are reported to be 12,000 to 18,000 feet deep

It will be interesting to see if the TV special's speculation will be borne out.

Jeb said they would keep looking. Maybe he can tell them where to look now.

He's got a good track record ;)

There are more pictures from the bottom of the ocean at http://www.bea.aero/en/enquetes/flight.af.447/images.du.site.php

Jeb was right: in the summer 2009 after the accident he said that eventually the wreckage would be found. This is one accident where everyone wants to know what went wrong.

CNN's front page is reporting that they found the tail section. Presumably the black boxes are in there. Given how they're built, I would be surprised if information wasn't recoverable from them.

Excited is maybe the wrong word, but I'm really interested for them to get to the bottom of this one. I think the iced over pitot system is a very plausible explanation, but it would be great to have confirmation.

Extremely plausible since I've read two separate incident reports (one before and one since) outside of this accident that involved A330 aircraft with severe pitot icing that exhibited much the same symptoms as downlinked by AF447 to AF Maintenance during the accident sequence. Fortunately both those aircraft (from two separate carriers, also not AF) didn't loose control and crash.

I guess I haven't seen pics of recent FDRs, only old tape ones. Never realized that the solid state memory would be in a separate module, but when you think about it, makes lots of sense. The lighter and smaller it is, the more resistant to buckling and shock loads.

Fingers crossed that it didn't come apart at impact with the water several thousand feet up, and is instead lying somewhere close by.

Fantastic news! The data unit has been found and brought to the surface. Looking at the picture it looks substantially intact. Hopefully it stood up to the huge pressures at depth ok.
