NOVA - Bombing Hitler's Dams

Postby thelaker » Sun Jan 29, 2012 1:30 pm

Many of you might be aware of the whole WWII German dam busting project of the British, but a recent episode of Nova ( ... -dams.html) featured a contemporary effort to reproduce the project (er...not with a real bomb or dam, but still...). The Buffalo Airways DC-4 and a few of the folks from Ice Pilots NWT show (e.g. Arnie - the chief pilot, Mikey - Buffalo Joe's son, and Rod - the chief mechanic) are featured prominently in this episode. There are several wicked shots of the DC-4 making steep turns and low passes as it drops the replica bomb.

Jeb and I were watching this ep the other night. Some interesting stuff there. Maybe we should talk about it in the podcast.

The footage of one of the tests were the bomb bounced back up and took the tail off the bomber was blood curdling

Fantastic show! Arnie hits the one block on the dam with the red X on it, first try. That's what 37,000+ hours of flying experience gets you. The dude abides.
Flying a Mooney M20D. One of only 3 fixed-gear Mooney aircraft still flying.
