Plane hits car on short final

Postby Andrew B » Sun Nov 04, 2012 9:35 pm

This video I believe just surfaced today. Unreal. The person behind the camera catches the crash, but then no good footage after that because they were rushing to aid the pilot and driver.

The more I look at that video, the more I think that pilot was going to bend that landing gear even if the car wasn't there. Landing short, and it looks like it stalled just before it hit the car. Hard to tell for sure of course. One thing's certain - he missed the displaced threshold by about 400 feet...

Glad no injuries to speak of!

Interesting. But, this never happens at Gibraltar (in Spain) where a major north-south highway crosses the active runway.

For terrain reasons, there is no choice but to have the runway and highway intersect, and somehow the cars always stop when airplanes, including commercial jets, are on final.

Take a look at the videos online of the airport at Gibraltar.

Theres a 3-400 ft displaces threshold at either end, so the planes shadow is the only thing that should have hit the SUV. Maybe the sight of the SUV blowing the stop line freaked out the new pilot? Maybe since this is in Texas and the pilot wasn't carrying so he used what he had?

We talk about this in UCAP 309, which (I hope) will hit the net early next week.
