Just wondering if this is the sort of thing Jack pictures in his mind when he feels uneasy about the concept of folding wings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairey_Gannet
This ungainly looking thing is a Fairey Gannet. It was a British-designed, turboprop, post WWII sub hunter, used by the navies of the UK, Australia, West Germany and Indonesia.
For a marine aircraft it was a big bird by the standards of the day, which probably goes some way to explaining its elaborate wing folding mechanism!
