Future Podcast Topic - Customs Checks of GA?

Postby thelaker » Thu Jun 11, 2009 10:59 pm

I'm sure you've heard of this story:

http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/Pi ... 519-1.html

"...Perry says he was going through his pre-start checklist for a flight to Loreto, Mexico on May 22 when his Cessna 210 was suddenly surrounded by yelling CBP agents and local airport police, weapons drawn (the Customs agents had M-16s) who ordered them out of the airplane."

Any chance of discussing this at an upcoming installment of UCAP?

What country do we live in? 1930's Germany? I'm okay with random checks but this is way over the line.

As much as I respect the efforts and expertise of the alphabet groups representing aviation, it seems to me that we're past due for some righteous indignation and outright anger at the treatment of all GA as suspect and any person on an airport not in uniform as a suspect -- in the vein of "prove to me you're not a terrorist.

This garbage must stop or between the different agencies in DHS your only valid mode of transport will be by car, bus or human mailing tube...

And the DHS secretary telling aviation people about how much angrier boating people are is wholly irrelevant -- particularly since I suspect that what's being developed for the boaters is wholly overboard, as well...

None of us want to hear it, but the solution is to give pilots background checks, and badges. Let us call it in when we see a problem rather than building a new bigger agency.

Delighted to hear my local NPR station broadcast a very honest story this morning (May 28) about the Customs and Border Patrol stopping innocent GA pilots and searching their airplanes. CPB does this with no explanation and without probable cause, reason or a legal basis. And it has been going on for years.

Listen to the NPR story here:

A commercial pilot, IFR rated, who flies a Cirrus SR22 out of JYO.
