This is fascinating, sad and disturbing. It's hard to get my mind wrapped around everything that went wrong - and all that could/should have gone right.

I really don't understand why the captain didn't take control. He had plenty of time to get into the right seat (the logical choice). If he had done so, the airplane would have started to fly again almost immediately.

Also, I find it remarkable that the two control sticks aren't coupled. There must be a good reason for this, but I can't think of one. Any instructor knows that when you're not handling the controls, there's a lot of information to be gained by watching (or lightly touching) the stick.
