Can Anybody ID This Airplane?

Postby jarheadpilot82 » Fri Jun 02, 2017 10:37 am

I was taxiing out last week in Bogota, Colombia, and saw this Colombian Air Force airplane. Those are some monster engines! I have no idea what it is, but thought that someone might be able to ID the model.

It sort of reminds me of 30+ years ago I was in Japan when I was in the Marine Corps. The Japanese Self Defense Force had removed the recip engines and retrofitted turbine engines onto a P2V Neptune. The engines were humongous! I am just wondering if this is a retrofit of some kind.

Just curious.

Bruce H is correct, Colombian Army An-32 (Ejercito de Columbia)

According to Wikipedia: The An-32 is essentially a re-engined An-26. The An-32 is designed to withstand adverse weather conditions better than the standard An-26. The high placement of the engine nacelles above the wing allowed for larger diameter propellers, which are driven by 5,100 hp rated Ivchenko AI-20 turboprop engines, providing almost twice the power of the An-26's AI-24 powerplants.

Also, a good clear image of one from Airliners.net...

Switching to advisory, squawking VFR. Good day!
