What is this plane?

Postby dcfly » Mon Sep 21, 2009 3:44 pm

Had an amazing flight in CAVU conditions up and across NY's Class B this weekend. Saw this airplane at Quonset State (KOQU). No idea what it is. Anyone?

It's ugly so it must be British. Actually, I have no idea. Quite unique.

Funny -- I was thinking "it's ugly so it must be Russian."

Nice job!

I gave up when I found a picture of a Shorts 360 on airliners.net last night. I should have tried a little harder.

I always wondered what a dumpster with wings would look like.

@ txpilot82

What do you mean? Brits are ugly! My missus would tell you that I am lovely!

As to airplanes take a look at this link ( a few US beauties in there too but must admit we design for function rather than looks sometimes)
http://www.fortunecity.com/tattooine/farmer/120/index.html

I think the Sherpa's (short 330 mil version) progenitor, the Skyvan is a lot uglier but many, many skydivers think highly of it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all.

In defence of British aeroplane manufacturers they did get it right sometimes - 2 examples spring to mind

1 the most graceful bomber ever flown

2 the most beautiful aircraft EVER (along with the best military aerobatic display team)

(ducks under desk to avoid the incoming!!!) ;)

I wouldn't say British people are ugly since that is part of my ancestry. :D

But the Brits could use a few pointers in making aircraft with sex appeal.

Nimrod

Jet Provost

I see the Nimrod made Paul's List. I appreciate the Concorde but I wouldn't say it's the most beautiful aircraft EVER. I'm not sure which aircraft would deserve that title. P51, F22, Super D....and so many others. It's hard to pick just one!

I agree that the Nimrod is not pretty but it does a great job. What they did to it for the AEW version takes ugly to a new dimension

Concorde has it all though: grace, power, speed, exclusivity - sadly no longer gracing the skies.

I agree that we could talk this subject for ever as we all see different things as beauty. I have a bit of a thing for the F-4 - all those odd angles and curves - just a superb machine. I have a vivid memory of 2 German Air Force RF-4E's departing from Waddington, UK just after a rainstorm on a very wet runway - full re-heat glowing in the grey conditions, giant rooster tails with thrust diamonds shining through the murk - stuff of dreams.

Then again I recently saw 2 Tiger Moths landing at an Old-Timer Fly-in in Belgium - that's not too bad a Brit design

Posting the Vulcan link yesterday reminded me of the USAF/RAF bombing competitions of the 1970's where the USAF always one prize - aircraft with the most engines!!!

I'm starting to discover the planes I find beautiful are mostly the ones that got me interested in aviation as a child. How else can you explain that I find an Air Tractor beautiful? I would bet this is true of most pilots. I unfortunately never witnessed a Concorde fly in person. My opinion would probably be different if I had.

But in the end, it doesn't really matter what the aircraft looks like on the outside. The view is essentially the same from the left seat (or front seat in tandem). :D
