"Morgan Fairchild" - UCAP #360

Postby RigaRunner » Wed Jul 30, 2014 9:50 pm

With reference to the list of "Ten Things You Don't See At Airports" anymore:

-- Baggage Carts -- in most European airports, there are free, small trolleys you can use while moving around the terminal after going through security. Why? Because they have figured out that people spend more money in the airport shops if they don't have to lug heavy or bulky hand baggage all over the terminal. Also, for what it's worth, most foreign airports seem to offer no cost trolleys from the baggage carousel area too.

-- Observation Areas -- someone should give an award to the airport authority at Naples Florida (KAPF) where they have recently installed a large observation deck about fifteen feet above the ground at the end of runway 23. Not only is it attractively designed of wood deck and aluminum framing, but there is a sun canopy, wheelchair access, bench seating around the sides, parking and a children's play area adjacent. http://www.naplesnews.com/business/naples-airport-boardwalk-ted-soliday-

That's a cool project at Naples - thumbs up! Good to see an airport manager actively inviting the whole community to the airport, and one who is able to make the investment in that outreach.

I just got home from a European trip, and I can confirm that the free luggage carts at the airport are very nice. On the other hand, you have to put a coin into a slot to get a shopping cart at the grocery store. Go figure.

More like a deposit. Maybe its just a city/suburban thing. You insert a quarter (or 1E coin) to release the chain holding one cart to another in the corral. To get your coin back, you insert the key on the end of a chain attached to an adjacent cart. People return their own carts rather than having an employee chase them around the parking lot. Remember how Tom Hanks character in "The Terminal" scratched out a couple of bucks retuning baggage carts?

The supermarket carts are like that a lot of places, too.

Yeah, I lived in Germany for a couple of years. If you are a regular customer then the grocery store will give you a slug with their logo on it so that you can lose that instead of your coin. All the wheels usually swivel, too not just the front ones.

I'm actually in Germany this week. Now you've seen! They use plastic slugs now.
