I've carried CH-53s in a C-5. It's a slow, deliberate loading process. Clearance on the sides is only a few inches.

I hear you -- watched a crew load a MH-53J (21 SOS, 352 SOG) at RAF Mildenhall back in the mid-90s. It was like watching the Galaxy giving birth in reverse! It all happened right in front of my office (the weather station looked out onto the main ramp) and it was fascinating to watch the helicopter guys stow the main rotor blades and fold the tail rotor boom, then the crew SLOWLY loading the thing into the rear of the C5.
