Just watched "Air America" last night after hearing about it from you, Jack. What an awesome (and ridiculous) film! I particularly like how anyone who's a 'pilot' is automatically capable and type-rated to fly anything from a DC-3 to a Huey. Loved that uphill airstrip, though! Great fun...

Yeah, I liked Air America for the flying stuff. But I haven't seen it in awhile. Guess I'll have to add it to my Netflix list.

Regarding uphill landings, James is spot on regarding landings you have to committ to, and nail if you want to keep the airplane in a single piece! And now Jeb is mentioning the altiport of Courchevel in the French alps, but we do have a few smaller ones in Italy too.

In France, there are a few "altiports", or airports at altitude, some of which need a special approval by the French DGAC like Courchevel. Jeb correctly remembers this video of a Baron landing at Courchevel:

More information about the runway and approach can be found here:

(text available only in italian, apologies!)

In Italy, we have a very pretty altiport on our side of the Alps we share with France and Switzerland with just a 210m grass runway, by the name of Chamois. 210m = 688 feet! Info here:

The runway seen from above, looks somehow normal:

But look at the view from the parking area where those two Flight Design CTs are parked! Where is the runway?? :D

Ah! There it is! Starting the downhill takeoff roll:

And climbout:

This video was shot by someone I know, who flew his LSA (I believe it's a Tecnam P92) and landed in Chamois, elevation 5800 feet:

Me, I haven't done it... yet! :)

God that looks like fun. Just remember, Big Mountains, Big Air. There can always be surprises just when you think you are really cool.
