Orange County Airport KMGJ

Postby cphillips103 » Mon Oct 26, 2009 8:13 pm

Orange County Airport in NY has a nice restaurant on it right next to the FBO.

Rick's Runway Cafe is a highly recommended place to fly to and eat right on the airport.

Very affordable. Food was very good. Lots of choices on the menu.

Friendly relaxed atmosphere with a nice view of the airplanes landing and taking off.

An R-22 plopped down on the grass next to the restaurant and nobody blinked an eye.

Some vintage, lots of Cessnas, Pipers, and nice jet.

When I was a kid in the CAP in the late 1970's, the adults would take us for rides and a lot of times, especially in the winter we would end up at the restaurant at MGJ. I remember that we used to see one of the local tv news guys, Chuck Scarborough there usually with his son at one of the booths.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Chuck is still on tv in NYC when I was there last summer. He used to be a bonanza driver, as I remember.

Another interesting Northeastern fly-in eating opportunity.

Is this the same Orange County and the TV Chopper guys?

KMGJ was the first stop on my long XC, KFRG - KMGJ - KGON - KFRG.

Nice little airpot and the cafe is nice. I second the motion to have the northeast meetup there.

I just posted a short-notice meetup with Jack in Nashual NH for this coming weekend (11/21/09), but I definitely think that the next one should be a little farther south and west. Maybe Orange County is the right place...

Now we just need the date and good weather!

Quick update for Orange County as of May 2010: Two thumbs up. Good food. Good service. Nice people.

The restaurant closed for a short period of time looking for new management/ownership.

I haven't been yet, but I hear that it is now open and the food is good.

KMGJ is a good place to fly into. So if in the area stop by to grab a bite.

just read a post online from June '12...Ricks runway Cafe has been replaced by the Friendly Skies Cafe.

I'll have to stop in a give everyone some feedback...
