Republic Airport (KFRG) - 56th Fighter Group Restaurant

Postby rcigliano » Mon Jan 21, 2008 9:21 pm

A nice restaurant that is made to resemble a 1917 French Style Allied Headquarters Farmhouse. It is located at KFRG right at the base of the control tower. The wife and I usually get a table in front of the picture window with a P47 Thunderbolt, F4U Corsair and a P51 Mustang on static display outside. Beyond that you have a view of the runway. If the winds are right, you can watch the planes take off from runway 19.

The inside is nice, with fire places, big band music and memorabilia from WWII. Tee restaurant sits on the site where P47s were built.

The best part is that my wife thinks it is romantic so we go there often and I don't have to make an excuse to go to the airport. :D

You as a follow-up, the 56th Fighter Group Restaurant closed on August 12 after being open for 30years. :(

Apparently the restaurant hadn't been able to reach an agreement on renewing its lease.

This was one of my wife and I favorite restaurant. She liked the food and atmosphere and I like the view of the runway, the P47, P40 and F4U right outside the window. We always asked for a table by a window so that we could watch planes take-off and land. There were even headphone jacks that allowed you to listen to the tower. We loved the World War II memorabilia and a farmhouse motif. I particularly loved the fact that it paid homage to the Republic P47 which built at Republic Airport.

We will miss the restaurant, it was a nice place to have dinner and take in aviation.
