Airventure Oshkosh Meetup

Postby jackhodgson » Thu Apr 23, 2009 12:56 pm

Reading about Jonathon's impromptu visit to OSH reminds me that it seems that a fair number of listeners seem to be planning to attend the fly-in this summer.

I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in volunteering to coordinate a UCAP meetup (or two) for during that week.

Let's have some discussion here about when and what and how that might happen.

Hi, all, and greetings from Lakeland, FL.

Like I need another volunteer job like a hole in the head, but I would be
willing to something to facilitate the Airventure 2009 meeting of the UCAP
fan club (or some similar reference.)

In the absence of further schedule info at this early stage of things,
the best I could offer now is to call the meetup for right after the
conclusion of Podapalooza 2009. That's a natural because everyone would
presumably be there already and we could head off somewhere together.

On the other hand, that would be a multi-podcast thing, and I don't know
if folks out there in UCAP land want to keep things pure. For me, I think
all the podcasters offer a lot and the more the merrirer.

I'd like to work around the UCAP gang (Jack, Jeb, Dave, Amy, James) schedule
so that as many of them could be with us, or vice versa. No point in the
fans gathering without the performers.

One thing that occurs to me is that there really is no such thing as a time
at Airventure that does not conflict with something else, since events
that week run from sunrise until late in the evening. So realistically we're
going to conflict with something.

Podapalooza has been a highlight of Airventure for me, so that's why I'm
jumping in. But if someone else wants to take it, I won't put up a struggle!

I think Wednesday evening might have the "least" going on and the most attendees, since we can capture the 1st half crowd before they leave and the 2nd half crowd after they arrive. I'd be willing to help as well. Are we talking a North 40 meetup?

FYI, I'm watching this conversation, but I'm interested what you folks think would be good. Let's brainstorm about this for awhile, and then make some plans.

I'm planning on arriving Wed night, but not early enough to make a get-together, unfortunately. Out of self-interest, I'd vote for having one a bit later in the week if possible. :)

Never been. It's all new to me. I'm pretty sure I'll be there whenever it is.

Hi, all,

There is a UCAP group on "mytransponder.net"
http://www.mytransponder.com/group.php?group_id=76

and some of the "mytransponder" folks are talking about a meetup as well
see http://www.mytransponder.com/group.php?group_id=144

There is a lot of interest in podcasts in general and UCAP
in particular over on the "mytransponder" site, so to the extent
that there is common interest, we may try to coordinate.

I acknowledge that it may not all fit together nicely, and
anyway if there's enough interest for two groups at two different
times/places, that's just fine as well!

Jack, How about a meetup in Camp Scholler??? My EAA Chapter (974) usually has two rows and we make our own town out of the place. We could perhaps host the event? What do you think? Here is a picture of what we will do when I get there..

Hello, Navionpilot and other airventure goers.

Thanks for the offer of a venue for a possible UCAP meetup at Airventure. Camp Scholler would be a fine spot, and your two rows sound like as good a spot as any, unless the preferred meetup time is a lunch gathering.

Which brings us to the trickier question of when, as opposed to where. Airventure has stuff scheduled from sunrise to late night, so finding a time not in conflict with anything is nearly impossible.

I think we should avoid conflicting with the Doobies (Monday evening) at least. The nightly movies start at 8:30 pm. I'm going to suggest that we try to squeeze in between the end of the airshow (and closing of the exhibit spaces) around 5 or 5:30 pm, and the beginning of the movie. That would only leave a conflict with the early evening programs at the Theater in the Woods, and of course, Podapalooza. Since we don't have a detailed daily schedule yet, some of this will have to wait, but for now I'm suggesting Wednesday or Thursday evening at 6:00 pm or 7:00 pm (-ish).

Another possibility (and who says we can't have two UCAP meetups?) would be a shorter lunch meetup at a designated eatery. Reactions?

Other aviation podcasters may be proposing other meetups; there will be overlap in participation.

Is anyone going to be there on Sunday??? I know Jack and a few others will. How about we meet at the Vintage Red Barn Sunday afternoon and discuss it. We could exchange numbers and contact info and decide when/where to meet during the week.
