List of 'must see' aviation destinations

Postby gmarshall » Tue Feb 06, 2018 8:39 pm

I'd like to crowd source a bucket list of aviation destinations.

I first thought it would be a list of museums, but maybe making it a little broader would be more fun?

I'll kick things off with a short top 5 list. Feel free to insert, reposition, or even remove entries if you have something to similar but better to replace it with. Simply repost the updated list in your post.

My list is *not* to be considered exhaustive, I'm restricting it to places I have personally been.

Greg's list:

---------Copy and edit this list in your post -----------------

1) Oshkosh Airventure
2) Smithsonian Air & Space museum + Udvar Hazy Center
3) Seattle Museum of Flight
4) EAA Aviation Museum
5) Canada Aviation and Space Museum

-------------------------

Notable absences that I expect others to add and insert in the appropriate rank:
Cape Canaveral
National Museum of the USAF
Kill Devil Hills
Duxford Aviation museum
Pima Air & Space museum + Boneyard
USS Intrepid
Albequerque Balloon Festival
Edwards AFB
Sun'n'Fun

When we've got a bigger list going, I'll go ahead and edit this post with the more complete list, and provide URLs for each entry.

A few more...

The Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola Florida
The museum at Wright-Patterson in Ohio (I've never been, but many people have pointed me to it)

Smaller attractions that may not merit a special trip, but if you're in the area...

Aviation Museum at Manchester NH airport
Warbird museum at Oakland Airport (on the GA side of the field)
Wings of History museum at San Martin Airport south of San Jose
Museum at San Carlos Airport Calif.

More as I think of them.

Yes Jack, the museum at Manchester is a sleeper. Great collection, which I recall has a lot of Air race history.

Another one .... Palm Springs Air Museum, on the airport, and has a great collection of cats: bearcat, wildcat, tiger cat....etc. And I believe most of them fly routinely.

A couple more...

For those of you who travel to Germany, I highly recommend two museums:

Auto & Technik Museum, Sinsheim
- one of the few places in the world you can see the Concorde AND a Tu-144 next to each other... PLUS tour both inside!!

- An-22 Cargo aircraft
