========== recommended aviation movies/tv ========== This is a list of movies, tv, youtube videos, whatever with aviation themes or scenes. * [Films] * [[|633 Squadron]] * 633 Squadron has enjoyed an unqualified string of successes. Their luck changes when they are assigned to bomb a German rocket fuel plant, in Norway which is guarded by heavy anti-aircraft defences, and the plant is considered bomb-proof.Lots of flying in DH Mosquitos * [[|Air America]] * Really poor movie, with many fun flying sequences in it. I always remember the scene where Gibson lands on the remote, really short, uphill runway. * [[|Air Mail]] * The 1932 classic. This movie has everything - airplanes, romance, stunts (by Paul Mantz), corny one-liners, and some really bad weather. * [[|Air Force One (1997)]] * Hijackers seize the plane carrying the President of the United States and his family. Available at (Link valid 1/13/2009.) * [[|Airplane!]] * A classic. Also known as "Flying High" in Australia and many other countries. * [[|Airwolf]] * has a bunch of [[|Airwolf]] episodes from the 1980's. The acting is bad but there are some good aviation scenes. The one I saw had an opening scene of a C-206 on floats taking off from a lake. * [[|Alive]] * [[|Always]] * Combine urgency of firefighting and young men growing up fast, pretty girls, love relationships and great flying scenes. * [[|Amelia]] * This is the story of Amelia Earhart. This is a must for any aviation enthusiast for the stunning aviation scenes and depiction of Amelia. You really get the sense that Amelia had an incredible passion for aviation. The love story between Amelia and George her husband is enough to interest those of us not infected with the aviation bug, too. * [[|Area 88]] * Japanese anime series about a group of mercenary pilots flying a collection of aircraft at a desert base. Regarded as an anime equivalent of Top Gun, it has some minor issues that could get on your nerves if you let them, like many other aviation movies do. The story, music and attention to detail help balance it out though and help make this series well worth watching. * [[|The Aviator]] * "He owns the Civil Aeronautics Board. But he does not own the sky." * [[|The Battle of Britain]] *filmed in 1968 the last great assemblage of flying WWII aircraft and lots of real flying (not CGI) * [[|Bee Movie]] * According to the laws of aerodynamics, bees should not be able to fly, but somehow they do. This is a cute morality tale about the importance of bees to our ecosystem that includes lots of cool flying scenes from a bee's perspective, along with a bee flying with an ultralight and a bee flying in the cockpit of an airliner. *[[|The Blue Max]] *Great WWI dogfighting and one instructive scene on the perils of buzzing. * [[|The Bridges at Toko-Ri]] * Capricorn One * Astronauts about to launch to Mars are taken from the capsule just before launch and fake it from a warehouse in the desert. The flying scenes with Telly Savalas are amazing featuring an old biplane vs two helicopters. * [[|1956 CAPTAIN EDDIE RICKENBACKER US WW1 ACE OF ACES SPEAKS]] *What a treat to hear such an important voice from the past on this Youtube video. * [[|Cloud Dancer]] * Total 70's cheese, but great aerobatic flying. * [[|The Dam Busters]] *The Dam Busters is a 1955 British war film, set during the Second World War, and based on the true story of the RAF's 617 Squadron, the development of the "bouncing bomb", and Operation Chastise, the attack on the Ruhr dams in Germany. * FAA Productions Studios * The FAA has put a lot of their material into videos which are available online. It is mostly presentations and lectures. The quality of the presentations is what you might expect from a government production but, there are some hidden gems and kudos to the FAA for putting this material out there for all of us. * FireFox * Half spy thriller, half flight to freedom (with stealth air combat). Clint Eastwood is the only man who can make it happen :) * [[|Flight of the Phoenix (Original)]] * Survivors of a plane crash in the desert create a new aircraft from the remains of the old, then fly it out * [[|Flight of the Phoenix (2004 Remake)]] * Survivors of a plane crash in the desert create a new aircraft from the remains of the old, then fly it out - the original was better :) * [[|Fly Away Home]] *A father and daughter decide to attempt to lead a flock of orphaned Canada Geese south by air, using ultralight trikes. * [[|Flyboys]] *Americans enlist in the French military and fly in the Lafayette Escadrille before the US enters WWI. * The Flying Leather Necks * John Wayne leads a bunch of WWII aviators flying Wildcats in the Pacific * [[|Full Flap TV]] *Full Flap TV is an enjoyable weekly videocast from the UK. It is good GA content put out by aviation enthusiasts. Also available on iTunes. * [[|The Great Waldo Pepper]] * And another instructive scene on the perils of wingwalking. * [[|Hell's Angels]] * 1930. Watch where you step in that Zeppelin. * [[|High Road to China]] * Good movie featuring Tom Selleck as a pilot for hire back in the 1920's. Great scenery and nice flying. * [[|It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World]] * The dying words of a thief spark a madcap cross-country rush to find some treasure. * Little Dieter Needs to Fly * Born in Germany, Dieter Dengler moved to America after WWII in the hopes of learning to fly. Ultimately he becomes a Naval Aviator and then a POW. This is a documentary about his life, but with a focus on his time as a POW and the subsequent escape and rescue. Plenty of airplanes and actual footage for us. This IS a true story. * [[|The Magic of Flight]] * IMAX movie with some great aerial footage including onboard the Blue Angels. * Memphis Belle * Fictional story based around the famous Memphis Belle B17 and her crew in WWII. * Midway (aka Battle of Midway) * Only 6 months after Pearl Harbour, this was the Pacific turning point for the USA in WWII. * [[|Never Cry Wolf]] * Opening scene, when the scientist is transported to the Arctic in a decrepit Beaver. * Nova episode about the Wright Brothers * [[|Watch]] (Link valid 12/31/08) * [[|One Six Right]] * A documentary film that celebrates the spirit of aviation at the [[|Van Nuys Airport]]. * [[|Pushing Tin]] * A feud develops between two air traffic controllers. * [[|Quantum of Solace]] * There was a pretty good aviation scene where he flew a DC-3 through the Bolivian mountains being chased by an armed single turboprop. It looked like a Siai Miarchetti to me but, I'm not sure. * I will have to write a nasty letter to the producers of the movie. I don't care how many people die in a movie but the destruction of a piece of history like a DC-3 is way out of line. * [[|Six Days Seven Nights]] * The scene where Ford begins to lose it flying the Beaver into a storm had a real ring of truth to anyone who has ever felt himself getting in over his head. * Girl was pretty, scenery great, ending happy. real feel good * [[|Speed and Angels]] * [[|Watch]] (Link valid 12/31/08). * [[|The Spirit of St. Louis]] * [[|Spitfire]] * The original story of the famous Spitfire, the man who invented it, and the story of his life dedication to the airplane that made history. By the late 1920's aircraft designer R.J. Mitchell feels he has achieved all he wants with his revolutionary mono-planes winning trophy after trophy. But a holiday in Germany shortly after Hitler assumes power convinces him that it is vital to design a completely new type of fighter plane and that sooner or later Britain's very survival may depend on what he comes to call the Spitfire. * [[|The Thomas Crowne Affair]] (Schweizer 1-23 version) * [[|The Thomas Crowne Affair]] (Schempp-Hirth Duo Discus version) * [[|Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines]] * Silly movie covering London-Paris race in 1910. Great shots of pre-WWI mono-, bi-, and triplanes. Including: * 1910 Bristol Boxkite Triplane (replica) * 1911 Roe IV ("Avro") Triplane (replica) * 1910 Deperdussin Monoplane (vintage) * 1912 Blackburn 'Type D' Monoplane (vintage) * 1910 Santos-Dumont Demoiselle Monoplane (replica) * 1912 Passat Ornithopter (replica) * 1909 Antoinette IV Monoplane (replica) * 1911 Eardley-Billing Biplane (replica) * 1910 Lee Richards Annular Biplane, with circular wings (replica) * [[|Thunder Birds (Soldiers of the Sky)]] *No, not the campy British puppet melodrama but a real, Technicolor live action movie set at an early WWII primary training base (Thunderbird Field, Arizona). Acting and story line are pretty cheezy (especially when our hero's engine "conks" and he goes into a spin), but there are still some good flying scenes with Stearmans, F1Bs and PTs/BTs. Gene Tierney's not bad looking, either. * [[|Top Gun]] * Tora Tora Tora * Excellent story about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour * [[|Twelve O'Clock High]] *The classic story of the early, desperate days of daylight bombing in WWII, leadership and the effects of combat stress * [[|U.S. Marshalls]] * The plane crash scene doesn't quite meet the standard of the train crash scene in //The Fugitive//, but it's close. * [[|Valkyrie]] * Valkyrie is a pretty good movie and it had one of the opening scenes with a Spitfire strafing the Germans including Colonel Stauffenberg aka. Tom Cruise who was pretty good in this film. There were a couple of good shots of the Fokker tri-motor plane that Tom Cruise's character traveled in. * [[|Wings Over the Wild - LighHawk in MesoAmerica]] * This is an awesome film about Project LightHawk in Costa Rica. It is very GA positive and worth a view. Free online at * [[|Dark Blue World]] * March 15, 1939: Germany invades Czechoslovakia. Czech pilots flee to England, joining the RAF. After the war, back home, they are put in labor camps, suspected of anti-Communist ideas. This film cuts between a post-war camp where Franta is a prisoner and England during the war, where Franta is like a big brother to Karel, a very young pilot. On maneuvers, Karel crash lands by the rural home of Susan, an English woman whose husband is MIA. She spends one night with Karel, and he thinks he's found the love of his life. It's complicated by Susan's attraction to Franta. How will the three handle innocence, Eros, friendship, and the heat of battle? When war ends, what then? * [[|The Tuskegee Airman]] * During the Second World War, a special project is begun by the US Army Air Corps to integrate African American pilots into the Fighter Pilot Program. Known as the "Tuskegee Airman" for the name of the airbase at which they were trained, these men were forced to constantly endure harassement, prejudice, and much behind the scenes politics until at last they were able to prove themselves in combat
